While you're doing that, your opponent(s) is using that money to build cheap units who are going around the map collecting all the resources/towns/items while gaining xp for heros and troops. I assume this means you're doing a lot of waiting around building up money and then using that money to fully upgrade your bases. I haven't actually played 3 yet, but assuming it's not that different from 1 you definitely can't play it like it's a Civ game.
